Specialized Center for Overnight Orthokeratology

Our contact lens center is specialized in the use of overnight orthokeratology lenses.

What is overnight orthokeratology?

Overnight orthokeratology is an advanced contact lens technique that allows for the correction of a visual defect through the nighttime use (during sleep) of reverse-geometry rigid contact lenses.

This type of technology has been known for years, but it was never applied for overnight wear because we did not have materials suitable for this purpose. With the advent of new high-oxygen-permeability materials, the use of overnight orthokeratology has gradually increased.

This technique, also defined as Corneal Molding, exploits the plasticity of the corneal epithelium. The overnight orthokeratology lens acts on 1/3 of the epithelium. During overnight wear, the corneal epithelium is modified by the contact lens, thus allowing the patient to enjoy good vision throughout the following day without the use of optical aids (glasses or contact lenses).

The treatment must be repeated every night to achieve consistent correction of the visual defect over time.

Overnight orthokeratology treatment is reversible. When we stop wearing the contact lenses at night, our cornea will return to its initial physiological shape.

This particular technique is not suitable for everyone and requires some preliminary examinations to evaluate whether or not an individual can use this treatment.

Numerous recent studies attest that orthokeratological treatment can contain myopic progression in myopic subjects during their developmental years.
